The Jolly Boys & The Curse of The Covers Album Part II

Old Stuff

Just a very brief word here about the "Jolly Boys", a Jamaican Mento band who were featured on LATER in September, and their Covers Album "Great Expectation"- Firstly I must refer you to everything I've previously said about cover albums - none of it applies here!

GREAT EXPECTATION is a FUN thing, so if you like FUN this is for you. There are some songs on this LP I've never thought of as FUN or found the need to own previously. There are songs here that have thought of as FUN for a long while and are FUN here too. Have I mentioned that GREAT EXPECTATION is a FUN thing? Yes, good. It is FUN. But when the FUN and the novelty has worn off there are actually some good covers here - my favourite is New Orders "Blue Monday" - it works in a mento style - I just don't know how it does - but it does. "Great Expectation" is not taxing, Albert Minott's vocals are imperious and the arrangements are all deft - and it's FUN! So turn off your brain and have some FUN, for as long as it lasts, and then get back to "Penis Envy" by Crass or CLICK TO BUY.
