Paul Normansell,
Doctor Dot to Dot!
And all of a sudden the scales fell from my eyes and in a moment of lucidity I saw that my obsession may be more than just fancy after all. Let's go back once more to the photograph of the Messiah Marley walking down the ramp to the stage door at the Birmingham Odeon, a photograph that can be found in a multitude of books about Bob & the Wailers.
Well as I've said previously when I go to Brum I usually go to this place and stand next to the over flowing bins, the rat boxes and the crates of empty beer bottles and wait patiently for Robert Nesta Marley to appear walking purposely down the concrete slope towards me, he never stops just turns his head and stares off into the distance over my right shoulder. Then he turns and goes through the open backstage door and disappears into the confines of the Birmingham Odeon, the black metal door closing gently behind him. And I've always thought it would be a positive thing to have some kind of commemoration of the fact that Marley once set foot here. Not a bloody blue plaque obviously, but perhaps this image made mighty.
Well thanks to my son and his obsession with The Killers (he'll grow out of it) I've been forced to confront, on a daily basis, the work of the artist known as Paul Normansell (see photo of my son's bedroom wall). And I think that Paul Normansell is the man for the job, he lives in Birmingham and he studied in Birmingham, and the boys got form, there's no denying that. Problem is though he doesn't know he's the man for the job yet, so I think I need to start a list if I want this thing done properly.
